A scar is an area of fibrous tissue that replaces normal skin after an injury. Scars result from the biological process of wound repair in the skin, as well as in other organs and tissues of the body. Thus, scarring is a natural part of the healing process. With the exception of very minor lesions, every wound (e.g., after accidentdisease, or surgery) results in some degree of scarring

The skin can repair small lesions in the top layer - the epidermis - on its own with new skin cells, most of the time without leaving a trace. It is different when it comes to lesions of the underlying layer.

Different types of scars

What there is to know? 

There are 4 different types of scars

1/ Hypertrophic scars are particularly common. They are prominent and most of the time red, but do not extend beyond the edges of the wound. This type of scar is often itchy and painful.

2/ Atrophic scars are often the result of an acne breakout and appear as small indentations.

3/ Sclerotic scars are often hard and lack elasticity. When they are located at a joint, they can significantly limit mobility. Sclerotic scars often form after a burn.

4/ Keloids are scars that widen beyond the edges of the wound. The formation of this type of scar is often due to a genetic predisposition.
The more difficult, early appropriate treatment is essential to prevent excessive scar tissue formation.
